More Information on helium(HE)

Helium (He) is the second smallest element in the periodic table. It has the lowest density after hydrogen and is indeed so light that it continuously escapes from the Earth's atmosphere into space, although it is also constantly replenished by solar winds. More precisely, helium is a colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-toxic noble gas that occurs only in small amounts in the Earth's atmosphere. Helium is extracted from natural gas, in which it can be contained up to about seven percent.

Its unique properties, including low density, low reactivity, and high thermal conductivity, make helium an invaluable tool in a variety of applications. For example, it is used in gas chromatography as a carrier gas, in medical technology for cooling superconducting magnets in MRI machines, and in semiconductor manufacturing for cooling certain processes. In the industry, helium calibration gas is particularly used for leak detection and tightness testing. Thanks to its small molecule size, even the smallest leaks in systems can be detected. The use of helium calibration gas guarantees high accuracy and reliability in the monitoring and testing of plants and equipment operating under extreme conditions or subject to special requirements. Thus, helium calibration gas is crucial for ensuring the precision and performance of gas warning systems, sensors, and measuring devices in these diverse application areas.

Helium is non-flammable and non-reactive, hence it poses no danger to the environment or humans as such. However, usual precautions should be taken when handling helium calibration gas, as it can lead to suffocation in high concentrations. Therefore, always ensure adequate ventilation when dealing with helium calibration gas and avoid inhaling large amounts.
